How To Interpret Car Safety Ratings

Here at DCH Subaru of Riverside, we want all of our customers to be driving the safest vehicles possible. That is why it is important to know how to interpret a cars safety rating. Most of these crash test ratings come from two sources. These sources are the IIHS and the NHTSA.

These institutions perform tests on vehicles to see how they react to certain kinds of accidents. NHTSA is an organization that is part of the federal government and is the bigger institution of the two. They give vehicles a one-star to five-star rating. One star is not great, while five stars is the best rating.

The IIHS is a non-profit funded by insurance companies. The rating system used by the IIHS goes from poor to marginal, to acceptable, and the best rating is good. The IIHS uses 5 different crash tests, while the NHTSA uses three.

To make sure you are getting a safe car, you can visit our showroom in Riverside, CA. Our staff will be able to easily look up the crash test safety ratings for any vehicle you are interested in buying. If you are satisfied with the results you can even take that car for a test drive.
