If the Subaru Twitter moniker #ImprezaLove for the eponymous vehicle shows us anything, it's that Motor Trend may be onto several "somethings."

Among the expert reviewers' accolades halting just shy of superlative were 2017 Subaru Impreza's "sensibility, safety and all-weather capability in a compact package," its "new platform" showcasing a return "more competitive than ever." The big talk was borne out by each iteration's quick lateral-acceleratory response time – the Sport sedan reaching 60 mph in up to 9.0 and the hatchback's Limited trim putting in a good showing at 60 mph in up to 9.2 seconds -- as well as stoppage from 60 mph at 118 feet, akin to competitors in the sport compact segment, each made possible by a segment-bespeaking 2.0-liter flat-four engine pushing 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. And this was one standout feature in many. 2017 Impreza's new global Subaru platform features a fully independent suspension with rear control and front MacPherson struts, balancing smooth ride quality and handling precision for cornering like a pro, and with the wet-dry terrain-handling panache of all-wheel drive.

Practicality applause comes from Impreza's sedan and hatch iterations' large rear seats and 12.0 cubic feet of trunk space, expandable via standard 60/40 split-folding rear seats. Impreza hatchback goes the extra mile here, boasting 20.8 cubic feet behind the rear seats and a more than sizable 55.3 cubic feet with them folded. High-quality soft-touch plastics bedeck the door panels, dash and elsewhere, engirded by ample padding in necessary areas as well as sound insulation.

Other standard features include Subaru’s updated STARLINK infotainment system with 6.5-inch and larger 8.0-inch touchscreen options, with the Limited hatchback showcasing navigation capability standard, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, voice command, EyeSight active-safety and driver-assistance systems with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and blind-spot warning, and more. Likewise, 2017 Impreza earned TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the IIHS, scoring Good on crash and headlight safety tests when equipped with available LED headlights, as well as the highest score of Superior in the IIHS’ front crash-prevention test.
