Subura's Next-Gen Hybrid

The Forester Hybrid will most likely share the Subaru's Next-Generation Hybrid System installed in the upcoming Crosstrek Hybrid model. So, going by details released about that model in Japan and doing a little math, we can expect a 2.5-liter Subaru BOXER engine* delivering about 158 horsepower and 154 lb. ft. of torque, combined with a synchronous electric motor adding another 118 hp along with an additional 199 lb. ft. of torque. That all translates to better acceleration in the Forester Hybrid along with increased fuel efficiency, both of which will be a big boon for city commuters.

*The flat, symmetrical layout of the boxer engine minimizes vibration and friction, allowing for a smoother ride compared to other engine types that involve more complex motion. And with fewer components required to transfer power, boxer engines tend to work more efficiently overall.

Increased Efficiency

Energy recovery during braking and deceleration adds to efficiency. While Subaru has not released any official MPG numbers at this time, judging by the existing hybrid model in Japan, one can speculate the new Forester Hybrid may achieve a 20% fuel efficiency increase over the gas model, which makes us expect a probable EPA estimated 35 MPG* (city/highway combined).

*EPA estimates are still pending at the time of this writing.

Miles and Miles to Go

You'll get longer driving distances between fuel-ups with the Forester Hybrid. While the gas-powered Forester will take you an EPA-estimated 480 miles between fill-ups, as always, depending on driving habits and road conditions, with the Forester Hybrid's electric motor and energy recovery system, we anticipate an EPA estimated 600 miles between fuel stops. We extrapolated that number based on the average 20-35% increase in range between hybrid models versus their gas-powered versions. And remember, we're starting from a pretty darn fuel-efficient gas model with the Subaru Forester.

*EPA estimates are still pending at the time of this writing.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive

Enjoy the combined all-weather capability of the legendary Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system with the efficiency of Subaru's new hybrid system. Unlike some hybrids which use the electric motor to power rear wheels in all-wheel drive, Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive system, known for its off-road capabilities, utilizes a propeller shaft between front and rear wheels to enhance performance in snow and other challenging environs.
